My name is Kelly and I’m a British-Canadian screenwriter from Vancouver, who enjoys world and character-building, writing heartfelt dialogue, and cheeky and thought-provoking comedy.
I have been passionate about writing and storytelling ever since I could hold a pencil, and have kept a journal logging everybody’s secrets for as long as I can remember. My parents spent the majority of my childhood flipping houses, and my wonderful parents abandoned me in an empty room, kinda like Harry Potter, free from most construction tools and hazards, with a notebook and pen as my babysitter. So began my love of writing and illustrating. I quickly learned that I could never be bored as long as I had my imagination, and ever since I dreamed of becoming a writer.
My dad was concerned about my financial stability and worried that I couldn’t earn a living as a writer. In truth, he probably didn’t want me to live at home until I reached forty, so, at my dad’s suggestion, I became an accountant. For ten years, I worked fifty-hour weeks in an unfulfilling job, and my heart wasn’t in it. The money was great, but it didn’t make me happy. Clearly, I wasn’t spending it correctly.
I knew something was missing in my life, as a big part of my personality was suppressed. It’s difficult being creative when you’re an accountant because creative accounting is illegal, so I began making up stories again.
Like a vigilante, I worked as an accountant by day and a writer by night. I wrote my first manuscript, "Fake It 'til You Make It," a hilarious, fictional rollercoaster about my life, had I made different choices. Just like my protagonist, Kate, I was fast approaching thirty and didn't like the look of my future as an accountant living in Liverpool, England. I lived vicariously through Kate, who quit her job and pursued her dream of marrying a millionaire, and wished that I could be so brave.
While I didn't marry a millionaire, I packed my bags, crossed the pond to Canada, and dove headfirst into film school to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time writer. My dad is thrilled by the way.
In 2022, I completed an intensive screenwriting course, placed in several prestigious screenwriting competitions, and built up a substantial body of work across various genres and formats. I am dedicated to honing my craft and have never been happier, waking up at 5 am every day eager to write. And no, I don’t wet the bed.
Later that year, my screenplay ‘Raindrops’ was featured in the Female Eye Film Festival Script Reading Series, where actors read my screenplay. I had people laughing out loud and the feeling was incredible. I was granted the rare opportunity to pitch my screenplay to several agents and producers in Toronto.
